Julie Thorndyke

Julie Thorndyke is a poet and writer of fiction for children and adults. A graduate of the University of Sydney’s Master of Creative Writing program, Julie’s collections of tanka poetry, Rick Rack , Carving Granite and Borrowed Riches were published by Ginninderra Press.

Editor of Eucalypt: a tanka journal since 2017, Julie’s books include Mrs Rickaby’s Lullaby (adult novel) shortlisted in the SWWNSW Member Book Awards 2020 and Divertimento, a collection of short stories (2021) shortlisted in the SWWNSW Member Book Awards 2022.

Since being introduced to the tanka form by Beverley George around two decades ago, many journals have published Julie’s tanka including Eucalypt, Yellow Moon, Paperwasp, Stylus Poetry Journal, Hecate, Ribbons (USA), Red Lights (USA) Moonbathing (USA) GUSTS (Canada) Presence (UK), Blithe Spirit (UK) Kokako (NZ) and International Tanka (Japan).

Julie’s picture books for children Waiting for the Night (2018) and Watching through the Day (2020) were published by IPKidz. A third picture book Alice’s Shoe was published by MidnightSun Publishing in 2023. Her stories and poems have appeared in The NSW School Magazine and many other journals and anthologies. In 2020 she co-edited Splash, Slither, Squawk! anniversary anthology for SWW NSW.

A librarian for many years, Julie has been a reviewer for Buzz Words and Reading Time, and creative writing course facilitator for Macquarie Community College. Julie was Writer in Residence at The Old School, Mount Wilson for the month of June 2021 and is currently writing an historical novel set on the mountain. Her website is https://juliethorndyke.com/
