Heil House: The House That Peter Built

Robyn Floyd

A betrayal? A child born out of wedlock? What happens when you unearth secrets perhaps hinted at in family stories, or discover others that have been well-hidden or forgotten?

Heil House: The House That Peter Built is the story of German immigrant Peter Heil, who built a home for his family in the Victorian country town of Elmore using the clay from his own land. It traces the lives of the generations who grew up within its walls. Drawing on letters, photographs, public records and oral memories this book leverages on historical context, uncovers some mysteries and shares the triumphs and tragedies that shaped the lives of the Heil family for over 50 years.

Heil House may encourage readers to document their own family stories, beginning with one individual and an intriguing story rather than attempting to trace an entire lineage.
