WRITING OUR INHERITANCE
Poetry and Creative Writing Workshop with Angela Costi
Angela Costi’s maternal grandmother, Yiayia Maroulla, left her Cypriot embroidery for Angela to unravel the threads of stories and memories. Angela wrote An Embroidery of Old Maps and New (Spinifex, 2021).
There are stories we’ve inherited. Often, they’re told throughout our growing years. Sometimes they’re prised open or found in the nooks and crannies of heritage and ancestry. Inspired by objects that have been passed down to us – connected to our personal history. A photo. A diary. A quilt. A painting. Fragile as porcelain or glass. Resilient as a ring or a brooch. Ephemeral as a candle or a bulb. What were you given? Or what was left? What do you know about it? What is its significance? Why is it important to you?
This is an immersive workshop (involving touch, smell, visual imagery) to encourage writing that comes from the personal yet has universal significance.
Speaker: As well as a published author of five poetry collections and nine produced plays, Angela Costi is a qualified, community-engaged facilitator with many years of experience. She has recently completed a poetry residency at the Brunswick Library where she delivered several successful workshops, as well as a regional poetry workshop at Shepparton’s art galleries. Her poetry and other literary works are in current issues of Australian Poetry Anthology and Journal, Rabbit Nonfiction Poetry Journal, Eureka Street, Live Encounters, Meniscus and StylusLit.
