Join us to meet author Liz Filleul and her recently-published historical short story collection, Sentenced Beyond the Seas. Hear about Liz’s writing career and her path to publication.
Speaker:
Liz Filleul is a multi-award-winning short story writer. She won the Scarlet Stiletto Award for short crime fiction in 2004, was runner-up in 2007, 2011 and 2016, won the Cross-Genre Award in 2011, and the Mystery With History Award in 2016 and 2025. She was a finalist for the 2023 Derringer Award, run by the Short Mystery Fiction Society in the US. Since 2020, she has had more than 50 stories and several serials published in UK magazine The People’s Friend. She has also been published in English Woman’s Weekly and in the US magazine Woman’s World.
Her short story collection, Sentenced Beyond the Seas, featuring a convict constable solving crimes in 1830s Van Diemen’s Land, was published by Clan Destine Press in September 2026.
Liz was born in the UK and migrated to Australia in the 1990s after meeting her Australian husband while backpacking around Tasmania. She lives on Mount Dandenong.

Join SWWV members Anna Ciddor, Pam Joseph, Angela Costi, Rhonda Cotsell and Lindsay Bamfield for a panel discussion talking about some of their recent reading material and why they chose it. This is not only about selecting ‘top-ten’ book lists, or giving 5-star reviews or even about giving book recommendations but an honest discussion about what they read and what they gain from their reading, although some of the selections will certainly fit the top-ten and 5-star criteria. Members of the audience will be invited to share some of their choices and thoughts on reading too.
